The Illusion Trail · Stop 2

Floating Staff

A levitation illusion. Sit cross-legged on a hidden seat, lean lightly on the staff, and the world believes you are hovering.

A young man sits cross-legged in mid-air in a sunlit woodland, holding a tall wooden staff. There is no visible support beneath him.
How to capture it

Two people, three steps

Inside the wooden staff is an anchor pole and a tiny hidden seat. When you sit on the seat with the staff in front of you, the pole disappears behind it. To the camera, you look as though you're floating.

1

Sit on the hidden seat

Settle carefully onto the small seat behind the staff. Make sure the anchor pole is fully concealed by your body and the staff in front of you.

2

Cross your legs & balance

Bend your knees and bring them together. Lean lightly on the staff and find your balance. It should feel as though you are hovering in mid-air.

3

Take the shot

Photographer stands on the marked photo point. Frame the shot to include the forest floor beneath the feet, so the levitation reads clearly.

For a cleaner shot

Three things to watch

  • Make sure no part of the seat or pole is visible behind the staff.
  • Keep your knees together for a cleaner levitation effect.
  • Frame the shot to include the forest floor beneath your feet.

More wonders ahead

Each stop on the trail is a different illusion. Follow the path through the trees, and don't forget to take a photo at every one.
