The Illusion Trail · Stop 4

The Bottomless Well

A brick well that descends forever, lit by lanterns vanishing into a depth that should not exist.

Looking down into a brick well at Cedar Hollow's Illusion Trail. Lanterns line the walls and recede into apparent infinity.
How to capture it

Three small actions

Two parallel mirrors stretch the depth of the well into apparent infinity, with lanterns marking the descent. The trick reveals itself only when you lean in.

1

Lift the cover

Gently lift the cover and press the button to awaken the lights below.

2

Gaze inside

Lean over the rim and see how far the tunnel seems to descend. The further you look, the deeper it pretends to go.

3

Take a photo

Hold your phone steady and shoot straight down. But hold tight, it's a long way to the bottom.

A little about it

A trick of mirrored light

Beneath the cover, two mirrors face each other in perfect parallel. Light from the lanterns bounces between them, casting reflection after reflection, each a little dimmer than the last.

Your eye reads the receding lights as distance. Your brain, knowing wells go downward, fills in the depth. What you see is real light, but the bottom is only an idea, vanishing into the place where the two mirrors agree.

Glance away, and the spell breaks. Glance back, and you fall in all over again.

More wonders ahead

Each stop on the trail is a different illusion. Follow the path through the trees, and don't forget to take a photo at every one.
